Puerto Natales Named Culinary Capital by the World Food Travel Association

The city joins an exclusive list that includes Granada, Bonaire, and Cuenca (Ecuador) as one of only four Culinary Capitals worldwide.

Puerto Natales, November 29, 2024 – This week, the World Food Travel Association granted Puerto Natales the prestigious title of Culinary Capital. This recognition certifies that the city meets the high standards of quality in products and services sought by tourists in a gastronomic destination. This is the first time the title has been awarded in Chile and only the fourth time globally.

The nomination for this distinction was spearheaded by the Última Esperanza Tourism Chamber through the association’s Culinary Capitals Program, highlighting the region’s unique attributes, traditions, and commitment to food sovereignty.

Adriana Aguilar, manager of the province’s Tourism Chamber, stated, “For over 20 years, Puerto Natales has cultivated a rich gastronomic identity that enhances our appeal as a tourist destination. Applying to the Culinary Capitals program was a natural step, and now our place among the world’s gastronomic destinations is confirmed.”

The city joins an exclusive list that includes Granada, Bonaire, and Cuenca (Ecuador) as one of only four Culinary Capitals worldwide.

Meanwhile, the World Food Travel Association’s Ambassador in Chile, Dalma Díaz Pinto, noted, “The Culinary Capitals program provides an impartial audit of a destination’s culinary culture and readiness to attract food travelers. These travelers tend to contribute an average of 25% more to the local economy than traditional tourists. We warmly welcome Puerto Natales to our international network.”

Las Torres Patagonia celebrated the city’s recognition, highlighting the sustainable cocktail program developed by Federico Gil, Head Bartender at Bar Pionero in Hotel Las Torres. This initiative is a milestone in the region, combining sustainability, gastronomy, and mixology.

Being named a Culinary Capital boosts brand visibility, extends tourist seasons, and attracts more visitors. It fosters community pride and encourages new cross-sector partnerships, creating opportunities for local businesses and building valuable international connections.

The Culinary Capitals program was established to promote lesser-known destinations with a rich culinary offering. In doing so, Puerto Natales joins an exclusive list of cities with this distinction, alongside Granada, Bonaire, and Cuenca (Ecuador).
