As part of the “10 Volunteers for 10 Days” campaign, Las Torres Patagonia opened a new section of the trail to Base Torres. For the first time, SKY Airline has joined the campaign as a strategic partner.

Torres del Paine, March 26. In partnership with SKY Airline, Las Torres Patagonia has inaugurated the first rebuilt stretch of the trail to Base Torres Viewpoint. The fully completed section adds 3.3 kilometers of restored, sustainable trail.

This action is part of a larger three-phase plan to improve safety, reduce environmental impact, and encourage more responsible tourism on one of the most traveled routes in Torres del Paine National Park.

The milestone was achieved thanks to the “10 Volunteers for 10 Days” campaign, an initiative launched by Las Torres Patagonia. This is the third year of the campaign, and this year the company has partnered with SKY Airline to expand its reach and impact.

“This opening is a big step forward in how we think about tourism: it’s not just about getting to know and appreciate a unique place, but also about actively helping to preserve it. This new section is the result of a long-term effort to protect the environment and provide a better experience for our visitors,” said Josian Yaksic, CEO of Las Torres Patagonia.

“Las Torres Patagonia would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who took part in the third edition of our volunteer program, as well as in the two previous ones. It is thanks to you that we are able to inaugurate this new section leading to the Base Torres viewpoint today,” said John Alejandro Ojeda Ojeda, Conservation, Sustainability, and Safety Manager at Las Torres Patagonia.

Volunteers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Chile are undertaking critical tasks such as removing topsoil in designated areas and shaping the trail profile using back-slope and out-slope techniques, which are essential to ensure proper drainage and prevent erosion caused by heavy rainfall.

This year, SKY Airline helped transport volunteers and equipment from countries around the world, thereby supporting the project and reinforcing its commitment to the destinations it serves.

This partnership is part of the airline’s sustainability strategy, which balances operational efficiency with reducing its environmental impact. The airline’s current fleet consists entirely of Airbus neo aircraft. It has reduced its CO₂ emissions per passenger by 58% since 2010, and in 2024 alone, it prevented more than 315,000 tons of CO₂ emissions thanks to technological and operational improvements.

“At SKY, we see sustainability as a responsibility that also comes through in how we engage with the destinations we serve. Joining Las Torres Patagonia for this inauguration is a reflection of that vision: to help conserve an iconic Chilean landmark by supporting a tangible initiative that connects tourism, environmental heritage protection, and collaboration between stakeholders,” said Marco Larson, Head of Sustainability at SKY Airline.

This progress represents a concrete step toward more sustainable park management, based on a project developed by Las Torres Patagonia and strengthened through alliances that help scale its impact.

From the participants’ perspective, the project really shows its value on the trail. “Being part of this volunteer program gave me a chance to experience Torres del Paine from a different angle: not just as a tourist, but as someone actively contributing to its conservation,” said Pablo Olivera, a Chilean volunteer in the program.
